Frequently Asked Questions (Natural Hair)
What is the first step in going natural?
When you decide to go Natural this is called a transitional stage. The first step is committing to discontinue using all chemicals in your hair. No RELAXERS.
How long will it take for the relaxer to grow out of my hair?
Relaxers do not grow out; they MUST be cut out.
If I want to go Natural do I have to cut off my hair?
No. You can continue to style your hair on a weekly base , start trimming your hair about an inch once a month. Then you can begin the process of pressing the new growth instead of using chemicals.
If I am natural can I press/flat iron my hair?
Yes, but keep in mind if you continue to press your natural hair for extended periods it will change the texture of your hair. This styling technique is fine for those who do not want to wear ethnic and urban styles. (The flat irons used in the salons use up to 400-500 degrees of heat.)
What kind of shampoo and conditioner should I use for natural hair?
You want to use a moisturizing and hydrating shampoo. The purpose of shampoo is to cleanse the hair.
My hair is very dry, what can I do?
I would suggest you have regular Oil Treatments. You can also try a steam dryer, instead of the standard electric dryers commonly used to dry hair.
If I am natural can I get color in my hair?
Yes, just remember that you will only be natural to the extent that you do not have a relaxer because color is a chemical.
How long does it take for hair to loc?
Anywhere from 3-12 months depending on the texture of the hair. The best texture for Locs is kinky, nappy, and coily hair.
